Christmas Appeal finishes on a high
07 January 2008
The Times Christmas Appeal, which ran throughout December finished, on Saturday as the newspaper printed the final article in the appeal.
The article looked at Riders’ programme in the Gambia, telling the story of health worker Sheriff Senghore and how Riders are helping him to reduce malaria deaths in his area.
In 2002 Riders began managing all the vehicles for the ministry of health in the Gambia. This has meant health workers like Sheriff always have access to a working motorcycle, so they can reach rural communities with regular health care. As Sheriff says in the article, ‘Suddenly the dream came true. I used to go to villages and they would say, “Yesterday a child died here”. Not any more.’
The piece represents a fitting end to the appeal, which started over a month ago with a feature in the Saturday magazine - also about our Gambia programme.
Over the month of December the Times has carried a series of articles looking at our work in Zimbabwe, the Gambia, Kenya and Lesotho. For a full list of the articles, including links to the stories on the Times website, click here.
You can still make donations to the appeal until the end of January. If you would like to make a donation through the appeal, click here. To find out about the other ways that you can support our work, click here.
We would like to thank everyone that has supported the Times Christmas Appeal. The appeal will allow us to help more health workers like Sheriff so they can provide even the most isolated communities with regular health care. The appeal will bring us closer to our goal of reaching an additional 10 million people by 2010.
We will bring you information on how much you have raised as soon as all the donations are in. In the meantime, to read more about how you support is helping us to reach millions of people across Africa, click here.
