Our Volunteers

Riders work is reliant on the support of its army of volunteers who form the backbone of our fundraising activities. The LifeRiders are one of Riders' biggest and longest serving supporters. The head LifeRider is Malcolm Emptage, and he makes sure that we are kept up to date with all the team's adventures.

Supporters in the Spotlight

Meet...Peter Vasey, a Riders volunteer from Ely, Cambridgeshire.

peter_vasey_riders.jpgWhy do you volunteer for Riders for Health?

I am still a relative newbie to Riders but I do like the more practical approach taken to solving some of Africa’s problems. I am not a great one for just dishing out money, so helping establish long term solutions makes much more sense and it is a long held belief of mine.

Both my and my wife’s families have very strong links to Africa. My grandfather was Mayor of Nairobi, Minister for Finance for Kenya and on the first cabinet of Tanganyika. My father lived in Kenya for 27 years and my wife's parents were missionaries in Kenya, The Sudan, Malawi, Cameroon and Zambia. That, and the fact that I love bikes, made Riders an obvious choice.

What do you do to help Riders for Health?

I work for a company called KPMG who has a very strong Corporate Social Responsibility programme; I am allowed to take a certain amount of hours a month, paid, to do work for my designated cause or charity. I like to use mine wherever possible to help out at the weekday events; the last time was the helmet bus at the NEC show.

I recently approached KPMG for support in order to pay for a motorcycle, training and kit. I raised a business justification case with the help of Jennie Goodman, added some personal background, and KPMG kindly donated £2000. It’s a fantastic approach for a company of that size to have.

Without the support of all of our volunteers we would not be reaching the millions of men, women and children in Africa with regular, reliable transport – Thank you
