Rotary

Riders for Health is proud to be associated with Rotary International, and we are very grateful for the strong support we receive from Rotary Clubs throughout the UK and overseas. Our long-standing relationship is based on a shared commitment to direct and practical action, which builds truly sustainable development for Africa.rotary1.jpg

In the 12 years that Riders for Health has been a registered charity, the support we have received from Rotary has helped us to raise the issue of transport on the global development agenda. From early 1999 to June 2006, Riders efficiently maintained the fleet for the Polio Eradication programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Nigeria, helping Rotary International to attain their goal of combating polio in the country. And in the last year alone, Rotary Clubs have raised over £22,500 to support Riders’ life-saving work in Africa, donating funds, tools and vehicles to our programmes in Zimbabwe, Nigeria and the Gambia.

Riders for Health believes that, in the 21st century, people living in rural Africa should not be isolated from the health care they need. With new programmes beginning in Lesotho and Mozambique in 2008, there is even more reason for your club to get involved. Working together, RIBI and Riders can continue to promote the essential role of appropriate infrastructure and transport for development, helping millions more people in Africa to look forward to a healthy future.

Why support Riders for Health?

Currently, 30,000 children under the age of five die every day across the developing world from preventable or treatable diseases including measles, diarrhoea and malaria. More than half of women in sub-Saharan Africa give birth alone or with untrained assistance. Often the single factor preventing the delivery of available health care is the lack of managed transportation.

Mobility is a vital issue, fundamental to the delivery of health care. Put simply: When you keep health workers mobile, you keep people alive.

By supporting Riders for Health, a Rotary Club can guarantee maximum impact towards its commitment to health care and poverty alleviation, helping to build an appropriate and durable infrastructure. This will save millions of pounds of aid money, while making a real difference to the lives of millions of people in Africa.

Riders for Health can provide speakers free of charge, as well as promotional materials and support for fundraising events. Rotary-funded vehicles can also wear the logos of the supporting club, and the efforts of the club will be featured on these pages.
