Awards

The quality and innovation that Riders brings to its programmes in the field have been recognised by the leading voices in the development community. Over the past ten years, Riders has received a number of awards, including:

2013

  • Top 100 NGOs, The Global Journal

    Riders for Health came in 31st position in The Global Journal’s Top 100 NGO’s. Approximately 450 NGO’s from all over the world submitted applications. Key criteria for the selection process included: impact, innovation and sustainability. Riders placed 7th position in the innovation category.

2012

  • Best Transport Achievement Award, Fleet Forum

    UPS and Fleet Forum recognised Riders for Health’s work in the Gambia at the Fleet Forum Annual Conference in Geneva. Riders’ award-winning programme has made the Gambia the first country in Africa to secure reliable access to primary health care for its rural population.

2011

  • International Health Promotion Awards

    Riders for Health came third in the International Health Promotion Awards. Riders was shortlisted for our work strengthening health systems in Africa with reliable transportation.

2009

  • Social Enterprise Category, Third Sector Awards

    Riders for Health won at the 2009 Third Sector Excellence Awards in recognition of our innovative vehicle leasing programme in the Gambia.

2006

  • Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship

    The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship honour and provide support for organisations which are applying innovative and effective approaches to resolve critical social issues around the world. Riders for Health were awarded $765,000 to help strengthen our existing African programmes and replicate our model into a new country.

  • Tech Museum Award, The Tech Museum of Innovation

    The Tech Museum, based in San Jose, California, named 25 Laureates from among 951 entries for the prestigious Tech Museum Awards Programme, which celebrates those who leverage new and existing technologies to benefit humanity.

  • Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award

    Entrepreneur Of The Year is firmly established as the benchmark for world-class business leaders, acknowledging their contribution to the global economy and their extraordinary achievements.

  • Paul Harris Fellowship

    Andrea Coleman, Riders for Health’s co-founder and CEO, was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship, given to Rotarians to reward distinguished service.

2005

  • Best Practices in Global Health, Global Health Council

    This award is given annually to highlight and celebrate successful and innovative efforts on the ground dedicated to improving the health of disadvantaged and disenfranchised populations.

2004

  • Best Business Leader, Sage Business Awards

    Riders for Health was the only charity to win a top business award in the Sage Business Awards in partnership with the Daily Telegraph. Riders for Health’s co-founder and CEO, Andrea Coleman, was chosen out of a record number of entries as one of the country’s best business leaders.

  • Invited to join the Schwab Foundation

    The Schwab Foundation, sister organisation to the World Economic Forum, is the world's leading promoter of social entrepreneurism as a practical, rational methodology for engendering sustainable development in the world's poverty affected regions.

2002

  • National Lottery funding

    With funding from the UK National Lottery, Riders for Health established the International Academy of Vehicle Management (IAVM) in Zimbabwe. The IAVM offers training in safe riding and driving skills, vehicle maintenance and fleet management.

  • The Nedlloyd Worldaware Award for infrastructure

    This Award is given to an organisation which has assisted economic and social development through the provision or appropriate, sustainable and environmentally complementary transport systems.

  • World Bank Development Marketplace Winner

    Riders for Health won funding in the World Bank Development Marketplace competition for two Uhuru community development vehicles in Zimbabwe.

2001

  • UK Charity of the Year, Charity Awards

    Riders won the top honour organised by Charity Finance magazine for excellence in financial management.

  • Prince Michael International Road Safety Award

    The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognise achievements and innovations which will improve road safety. Riders for Health train delegates to ride motorcycles and drive vehicles safely and confidently in varying types of difficult African terrain.
