Future Plans
Riders for Health have achieved a great deal in the last ten years, but there is still much more to be done.
The entire continent of Africa – and beyond – is in need of efficient, cost-effective and predictable transportation. Riders has created a system that has the potential to take part in bringing about real change to the health of the people of Africa.
Each aspect of the Riders’ system is designed, with allowances for local or country differences, to be replicated on a national scale. It is all very well having an inspired or dedicated individual management of vehicles in one area, or in one NGO, but Riders has made replicable models that can be quickly reproduced, and which are systematic and independent of individual commitment or characteristics. Riders has prepared itself for replication by training a specific team, made up of members from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Nigeria and the Gambia.
Our current goal is to continue improving our systems, form more partnerships with health- and basic-service providing organizations and provide basic health care services to a further 10 million people across Africa by 2015. Riders will also continue to share advances in health and learning with the global community and advocate the importance of transportation infrastructure.
Riders’ goals:
- 1. Build the capacity of Riders’ existing programs by creating business plans for each country program, implementing evaluation and monitoring programs, hiring new apprentices and establishing additional teams. By 2008, Riders will be maintaining an additional 1,200 new vehicles.
- 2. Expand Riders’ programs into new countries by identifying potential sites and establishing partnerships, developing replication teams and opening at least one in-country workshop and office. By 2008, Riders will be managing vehicles in at least one new country, reaching an additional five million men, women and children.
- 3. Strengthen the core of Riders for Health to provide a strong platform for growth.
- 4. Raise awareness of the importance of transportation in global health initiatives and create the expectation that vehicles should run for years without breaking down.
